Clearview AI use reaches 1,803 US public agencies
Reporting based on leaked records and agency outreach found that more than 7,000 people at 1,803 publicly funded US agencies used or tested Clearview AI, generating nearly 340,000 facial-recognition searches, often without supervisors or the public knowing.
Why it moved the index
The records document broad real-world diffusion of facial recognition across law enforcement and other public bodies, including unsupervised use. The scale and consequential surveillance nexus support material misuse risk; confidence remains below primary because the underlying dataset was leaked and some agencies disputed or could not verify use.
