Facebook ends face recognition and deletes one billion templates

Meta announced that Facebook would shut down automatic face recognition and delete more than one billion individual facial templates, affecting over a third of daily active users.

Why it moved the index

Retiring one of the world's largest deployed face-recognition systems and deleting its biometric templates materially reduced surveillance and misuse exposure at scale. Meta retained other potential facial-recognition uses, limiting the control improvement.
