Vercel gateway data shows open-weight models took 56% of production tokens
Vercel reported that open-weight models processed 56% of tokens routed through its AI Gateway in August, up from 7% in December 2025. Their growing use helped reduce the gateway's average token price by 23.2% during August, although the sample represents Vercel customers rather than the whole market.

Why it moved the index
A majority open-weight token share and sharply falling inference cost on a production gateway are direct evidence that capable model access is diffusing and becoming cheaper, increasing competitive pressure and the number of actors able to deploy consequential AI. Confidence is limited because Vercel's gateway traffic is a large but nonrepresentative sample of the wider market.
