Waymo publishes 6.1-million-mile autonomous-driving safety record

Waymo published every actual and simulated contact found across more than 6.1 million autonomous miles in Phoenix, including 65,000 driverless miles. The 47 contacts included none expected to cause severe or life-threatening injury, and a companion paper documented the safety framework used for deployment decisions.

Why it moved the index

The research supplied operational safety evidence and a documented readiness process for a consequential Level 4 system already serving the public, strengthening transparency and control rather than relying on benchmarks alone. Company-authored data, counterfactual simulation, and a bounded Phoenix operating domain limit magnitude and confidence, while the separately dated public deployment verifies practical impact.
